Gayle L Troutwine was born in Kansas City and raised in Independence and Lee’s Summit, MO.
She graduated from Northwest Missouri State University in 1973. For the next two years she
tried teaching at public schools in Iowa and Missouri. Seventh graders drove her to law school.
Ms. Troutwine graduated with honors from the University of Missouri at KC School of Law in 1978.
During law school she also worked as a private investigator, a law clerk, a research assistant,
a waitress, a property manager and a process server. Also during law school she was a member
of the editorial staff of her law school’s publication The Urban Lawyer.
After law school graduation in 1978 Ms. Troutwine worked as a law clerk for the Honorable William
J. Peters in the Circuit Court for Jackson County MO. During her tenure Judge Peters broke the
record for the most number of civil jury trials ever tried in that circuit.
In 1979 Gayle Troutwine concluded her year with Judge Peters and then went to work as an
associate with the Independence, MO firm of Piedimonte and Piedimonte. She handled court
appearances in traffic matters, domestic relations and bankruptcies.
In January 1983 Troutwine went west after visiting Oregon the previous summer. Ultimately she was admitted to practice in OR (’83), WA (’84) and HI (’95). From 1983 until 1987 she worked for a firm in Portland, OR, McClaskey & Greig which changed its name to McClaskey, Greig & Troutwine. Here, her practice was confined to employment matters. The firm was general counsel to a hotel chain with 56 properties in 7 western states. Troutwine assisted the hotel chain with employment matters, re-wrote the employee manual and appeared before administrative agencies in California, Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Nevada.
In 1987 Troutwine formed her own firm with Mike Williams, Williams and Troutwine. This firm represented consumers profoundly injured by pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, food and food supplements, medical devices, blood and blood products. She was twice appointed by federal judges to serve as plaintiffs’ counsel in multi-district litigation.
From 1983 until 1999 Troutwine served on the Boards of the Oregon State Bar, the Western Trial Lawyers Assoc., the Oregon Trial Lawyers Assoc., the Campaign for Equal Justice, the Oregon Women’s Political Caucus and the American Trial Lawyers Assoc. Martindale-Hubbell gave her the highest possible rank. She was listed in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in American Law. She was a frequent recipient of awards, certificates of appreciation and the like. Troutwine was a frequent guest lecturer and speaker; and she had over 50 professional publications. It was during this portion of her career that Gayle Troutwine was often on local TV and radio stations as a guest commentator and was the subject of stories in Newsweek, Forbes, The Oregonian and even the Wall Street Journal which named her “The Queen of Torts”.
In 1999 Gayle Troutwine sold her interest in her law firm and took sabbatical to Maui, HI. During this time she adopted her daughter from Wuhan China. From 1999 until 2002 Troutwine volunteered as a community mediator, managed property, farmed, owned and operated a gift store, and became a licensed member of the Maui Board of Realtors.
In December 2002 Gayle Troutwine returned to Missouri so her daughter might better know grandparents. Troutwine enrolled at MU Law School and in the Women’s Studies graduate program. She completed all course requirements for an LLM in Alternative Dispute Resolution but never finished her paper on the subject of a damages design for women victims of defective products in an all-woman mass tort settlement. Instead, in 2004 Gayle Troutwine returned to the active practice of law.
Since 2004 Troutwine has practiced law in Osage Beach, MO 65065 as Troutwine Law Office. Her practice has been confined primarily to real estate matters and a very occasional adoption. She especially represents Condominium Associations and home owners associations. She is a M.A.R.C.H. certified mediator and a trained Guardian ad Litem.
